Cycle and pedestrian links for Llantwit Major

The Vale Council’s ambitions to see better cycle and pedestrian links from Llantwit Major to the beach have taken a step forward thanks to a bid for last-minute funding.

The council has been working on a scheme to deliver a safe off-road cycling and pedestrian route to the beach at Llantwit Major so that users can avoid the access road which gets very busy, especially during the summer months.

Leader of the Vale Council, Cllr Gordon Kemp, said: “It has been an aspiration of the council for some time to improve access to the beach and I am delighted that funding under the Safe Routes in Communities programme has been made available to the council to fulfil this. I look forward to the scheme being implemented in the early part of 2011, which will be of significant benefit to visitors to the area as well as local residents.”

Cllr Jeff James, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation, said: “The scheme will involve the provision of a three metre wide footway and cycleway constructed in sensitive materials across Council-owned land and will link up to an existing public right of way.

“This is great news and the Council is utilising emergency powers to increase the Capital programme to take account of this funding opportunity.”
