UK government attacked on contaminated blood scandal

Llanelli AM Helen Mary Jones has hit out at the fact the Assembly has been kept in the dark by the UK governments decision to refuse to share its report on the issue and questioned if it would be more appropriate for the UK government to pay the compensation.

Helen Mary Jones AM said:

“The UK government have shown complete disrespect, both to the Welsh government and the Welsh people, in how they have handled this issue. They have refused to provide any access to their reports until very recently, even though there are clear implications for people in Wales and despite repeated requests from the government in Cardiff to have sight of them. The so called ‘respect agenda’ has once again proved to be nothing more than Tory-Lib Dem spin.

I have had positive discussions with the Health Minister to put forward my concerns. I know that the Minister and the Welsh Government will do everything they can to provide those in Wales who have suffered because of these terrible mistakes with the best compensation available. However, I am left wondering why it is devolved institutions that are left picking up the bill for a UK government failure. These mistakes were made before the Assembly was even established but Westminster are washing their hands of that responsibility.”
