Tidy Towns grant for seven schools

Seven Neath Port Talbot schools have been the beneficiaries of grants awarded under the Welsh Assembly Government’s Tidy Towns scheme.

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, along with other Welsh Local Authorities, is taking part in this three year long funding project aimed at tidying up towns and cities throughout Wales.

A presentation was made recently to St Joseph’s Infants School at their morning assembly by Environment Board member Cllr. Colin Crowley.

St Joseph’s, who received £544.96 for a project to conserve and recycle rainwater, was one of seven schools to receive cheques under the scheme. Similar presentations have also been made to Blaenhonddan Primary School, for the creation of a wildlife garden, Catwg Primary School, for the creation of an environmental education area, Dyffryn Comprehensive School for the creation of shelters from recycled materials, and YGG Castell-nedd, for the conversion of an underdeveloped area to provide an outside play area and learning resource, all of whom, received £1000 each.  Crynallt Infants School received £680, to develop an unused area into a vegetable garden via raised beds while Tonmawr Primary School received £960 to convert an unsightly playground shelter into an outdoor learning classroom.

Cllr. Crowley said, “All of the projects put forward by the schools are excellent and go a long way to meeting the aims of the Tidy Towns Grant scheme. I know that not every school who applied has been successful and this is due in no small way to the quality of those grants that were awarded.”

Alan Shields, the Tidy Towns Project Manager added, “We had a very difficult task in deciding which schools were to be awarded grants as all the projects submitted were very good. Some of the grants were awarded in full, whilst others received the maximum of £1000 towards the full cost of their project.”
