Police operation in Swansea nets heroin

Police have intercepted a large consignment of heroin in a vehicle on route from Liverpool to Swansea.

The interception occurred on the A465 at Glynneath at around 6.30pm on Saturday 8th January 2011.

The sting was as a result of an operation which had been running since May last year targeting organised crime groups from Liverpool infiltrating Swansea in order to supply class A drugs.

A 44 year old man from the Swansea area was arrested and has since been charged with possession with intent to supply heroin and has been remanded at court.

Following the interception a series of warrants were conducted at a number of locations across Swansea and in the Merseyside area, by officers from South Wales Police.

On Wednesday 12th January a second man was arrested in the Liverpool area in connection with the operation and remains in custody.

During the operation, police seized in excess of half a kilogram of heroin (22oz) with a street value in excess of £60,000.

Superintendent Phil Davies of Swansea Police said: “This is the third occasion within the last two months that police in Swansea have achieved their largest single seizure of heroin, the previous being 6oz and 12oz in November last year.

“This operation once again demonstrates our commitment to ensuring organised crime gangs are kept out of Swansea.

“These have been significant seizures of heroin which were destined for the streets of Swansea.

“We will not tolerate individuals who supply and deal on the streets of our communities and those that are caught can expect to face the full force of the law.

“I would appeal to anyone with information on those who are involved in drug or criminal activities to come forward.”
