New year….new exhibitions

Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor is the place to be for the next few weeks with two exciting new art exhibitions on display.

The “Lines and Strata” exhibition presents a cross-section of contemporary drawing practice by artists across Wales and works from every medium were selected by a panel of artists from an open submission. There also is an exhibition of Ian Phillips’ work, which is a series of linocuts which depicts the dramatic landscapes of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula.

For the “Lines and Strata” exhibition, the title refers to the drawing process rather than a specific subject. It includes an interesting variety of works of art and it challenges and provokes debate about what drawing might be.

Ian Phillips’ work takes you on a journey through Eryri and Llŷn, in the footsteps of the artist, whose work is reminiscent of the simplicity and beauty of Japanese prints.

Delyth Gordon, Gwynedd Council’s Visual Arts Officer said:

“The new year promises to be an exciting one at the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery with two new exhibitions for the next few weeks.

“With a wide variety of contemporary pictures by artists from Wales in Lines and Strata to a combination of walks in Ian Phillips’ work, the exhibitions will be a treat for the eyes.

“We very much hope that people will flock to see these special pieces of work during the next few weeks.”

The two exhibitions will be on display in Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor from 22 January to 5 March 2011.

Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery is open Tuesday – Friday, 12.30pm – 4.30pm; Saturday 10.30am – 4.30pm. Entry is free.
