TV weatherman challenges you to try something new at your library

TV weatherman Derek Brockway is challenging you to try something new at your local library during the Welsh libraries festival. During 20th – 30th January there will be lots of events for all the family happening in libraries across Wales.

Libraries in Denbighshire will be holding a series of taster sessions to encourage people to learn something new with the help of their library. There are sessions on family and local history, learning a new language, textile crafts, digital photography, healthy eating and gentle exercise. Full details are attached.

Derek said:  “I’ve been set a challenge to try something new at different libraries across Wales. During the festival I will be shown survival techniques with expert Andrew Price in Monmouth. I will also be learning to knit at Milford Haven Library and trying out a bit of rap with renowned Welsh rapper Ed Holden at Bangor Library – I can’t wait! It just goes to show that libraries offer much more than books and cater for all types of hobbies and interests.”

Arwyn Jones, Head of Libraries and Archives for Denbighshire, said: “We are delighted to be part of the festival and look forward to welcoming new visitors to our libraries. We have the second highest visitor figures for the whole of Wales already – but there’s always room for more!”

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones, said: “Libraries are at the heart of the communities they serve, offering something for everyone. The festival is a great opportunity for the whole family to try something new and to bring libraries to the forefront of people’s minds.

The New Year is a great time to learn a new skill or to take some time out from our busy lives so the festival has come at an ideal time. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this national celebration.

Together with our programme of refurbishing and modernising libraries across Wales, projects like this are meeting our One Wales commitment to promote the public library network. And recently published figures show library usage is on the up in Wales.”

The festival will be launched on 20th January by the Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones and Derek Brockway at Monmouth Library.
