Enjoying good health and avoiding harm is a priority for us all as individuals and our families. Many of us make choices which do not support “good health”. We as individuals need to be supported and encouraged to make better choices to lead a healthier lifestyle!
Maerdy Communities First and the Rhondda Fach Partnership has been working with Ferndale Community School, Ferndale Swimming Pool, RCT Community Safety Partnership, Rhondda Womens Aid and RCT Sports Development to organize a Community Open Day giving individuals the information and tools to make better lifestyle choices.
A Community Open Day is being held in Ferndale Community School on Saturday 29th January 2011, from 10am till 1pm.
The Open Day will be an opportunity to learn about Healthy Lifestyle choices and to reduce stigma and raise awareness of Domestic Abuse. Domestic Abuse has many forms; physical, emotional, sexual or financial. Police Records show that reported cases of Domestic Abuse increase at Christmas, Valentines Day and during sporting activities – such as the 6 Nations Tournament – when Wales lose or even when Wales win! Often people excuse domestic abuse on the grounds of external influencing factors; ‘he lost his job’, ‘he was drunk’, ‘his football/rugby team lost’ etc.

There is no typical abuser. Domestic abuse can affect anyone. Unfortunately more men are also reporting as victims of domestic abuse, as are those in same sex relationships.
Women’s Aid has supported women whose partners were builders, ministers, solicitors, teachers, psychiatrists, politicians, bus drivers, plumbers, armed forces, factory workers, doctors, police officers, civil servants….a wide range of occupations.
