WNO’s production of Die Meistersinger von Nűrnberg wins South Bank Sky Arts Award

WNO has won one of the world’s most coveted arts awards celebrating the best of British culture and achievement. Richard Jones’ critically acclaimed production of Wagner’s masterpiece for WNO had already secured one award, the TMA’s Achievement in Opera Award.

WNO’s Die Meistersinger von Nűrnberg was nominated for the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Opera together with English National Opera’s A Dog’s Heart and Glyndebourne’s Billy Budd.

WNO Managing Director Peter Bellingham said: “Everyone at WNO is absolutely delighted with the news that we have won the South Bank Sky Arts Awards. It is the second major award for the company’s landmark production of Meistersinger and a real tribute to the hard work and dedication of every member of the company. The production, which was directed by Richard Jones, conducted by WNO Music Director Lothar Koenigs, and which featured Bryn Terfel in his debut in the role of Hans Sachs, received unanimous acclaim  – one national newspaper said that the performance by WNO could not be bettered anywhere in the world.”

The South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2011 will be screened on 25 January 2011 on Sky Arts 1 HD at 9.00pm.
