Monmouth is set to witness the formal granting of the freedom of Monmouthshire to the Royal Welsh Regiment when the town hosts a military parade on Friday, March 4th. The decision to grant the freedom, unanimously agreed at the last meeting of the county council, recognises the heroism and devotion to duty of the regiment during the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns.
The parade, featuring the band of the Prince of Wales’s Division and soldiers of the regiment, will march from the ancient Monnow Bridge to Shire Hall where chairman of the council, county councillor Peter Clarke, will present the Freedom Scroll. Also in attendance will be veterans and army cadets. Following the inspection the parade will about turn and march down Monnow Street, returning to the gated bridge.
Council leader, Peter Fox said: “The motion to grant the freedom of Monmouthshire to the Royal Welsh Regiment was approved unanimously by the council. This reflects the enormous respect we accord to our armed forces and pays tribute to those who sadly have sacrificed their lives or been injured on our behalf. We now look forward to welcoming the regiment to the Freedom of the County Parade and Ceremony in Monmouth on March 4th”.
