Budding Little Meteorologists in Cilfynydd Primary

Budding meteorologists of the future in Cilfynydd are helping Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and their consultant Capita Symonds to collect data which will help the local community.

The special science project saw a rain gauge being installed at Cilfynydd Primary School which will be used by year 6 pupils to collect data on the amount of rainfall in the area. The local Albion tip site will then benefit from the information that is collected.

In order to further secure the Albion Tip site, various checks need to take place, one of which is to measure the effect that rainfall has on the site in comparison to the rainfall in the immediate surrounding areas.

The pupils will now take measurements everyday and record this on a special chart that will be collected by Capita Symonds every 2 weeks. The pupils were so keen to play a part in the project that they are now considering making their very own rain gauges so they can use them at home.

The school science project will also include working with the pupils to look after the natural inhabitants at the site, by ensuring that they are not hurt by any works that might take place or visitors to the site.

The data that is collected by the school pupils and Capita Symonds will then be used to further the design and development phase of the project.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning, said: “It is very important that we engage with the local community and involve them in the process of making Albion Tip safer for the whole community. The pupils are very excited to be part of the project and I’m sure they will be very strict on the data collection as well as having fun whilst doing so.

“The Council’s consultant Capita Symonds, are now well advanced with the design and development phase and the information collected will help them during this phase of the project.
