The success of the Council’s strategy to support people to live independently within the community means that residential provision for adults with learning disabilities in Gwynedd is no longer being used to its full capacity.
Because of this, the Council is consulting on the future of two residential homes for adults with learning disabilities – Tan y Marian, Pwllheli and Pant yr Eithin, Harlech.
An information pack on four possible options for the homes has been prepared. Residents, their families and other stakeholders have until 9 March 2011 to present their comments.
The four possible options are:
- to keep both homes open and maintained in accordance with their registration
- to close Tan y Marian, Pwllheli and establish a residential unit for a total of eight residents at Pant yr Eithin, Harlech
- to close Pant yr Eithin, Harlech and establish a residential unit for a total of eight residents at Tan y Marian, Pwllheli
- to close both homes
The consultation period will come to an end on 9 March 2011. The comments and information gathered will be considered in full at the end of the consultation period. A report will then be submitted on the results of the consultation process to Gwynedd Council’s Care Scrutiny Committee in April 2011, then to the Council Board for a decision in June 2011.

“Carrying on doing things as we always have done whilst developing more innovative models of care is unsustainable and in many ways is contrary to how people want to live their lives.
“We recognise that this is a difficult and uncertain period for residents, families and the staff who provide high quality service at Tan y Marian and Pant yr Eithin. The Council will provide all possible support and assistance to those affected throughout this period.”
