A road near the Cardiff City Stadium could be named after Brian Clark, whose legendary goal defeated Real Madrid 40 years ago this year.
Supporters’ groups were invited to meet Councillor Neil McEvoy, Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council to discuss possible names for the road leading to the Capital Retail Park.
Councillor Neil McEvoy, a Bluebirds supporter, said: “When I asked fans for suggestions, they came up with nine great names.
“By far and away the most popular was Brian Clark and following the meeting with supporters’ representatives that is the name I will be taking forward. The road runs alongside the boundaries of the stadium so would be an ideal choice.
“In the future, I’d like to see more new streets in Cardiff named after our sporting heroes – whether they are football, rugby, cricket, athletics or other sports. We should celebrate our legends.”
Councillor McEvoy said that businesses in the retail park were being consulted on the naming of the road while Canton councillors have been asked for their views. A final decision will be taken by Councillor Delme Bowen, Cabinet Member for Transport at Cardiff council.
The names put forward by fans were Brian Clark, Phil Dwyer, Derek Tapscott, John Buchanan, Alf Sherwood, Danny Malloy, Don Murray, John Charles and Ron Stitfall.
Keith Morgan, a Trust board member, who attended the meeting with Councillor McEvoy, said: “The meeting was extremely useful and we’re pleased that supporters’ groups were asked for our views.
“I’m sure that naming the road after Brian Clark would be a popular choice among City fans, given his iconic status with the headed goal that beat Real Madrid 40 years ago,” said Keith, who was among the crowd at Ninian Park for the European Cup Winners’ Cup clash.
He added: “After his retirement, Brian continued his involvement with the club as a match-day host until the time he became ill. Brian was a real gentleman.”
