14 February is the closing date for entries for this year’s Lle Celf Open Exhibition, and the National Eisteddfod is calling on artists and makers to submit entries before the end of the week.
“This celebration of innovation and excellence offers people a broad view of contemporary creative activity in Wales,” said Eisteddfod Visual Arts Officer Robyn Tomos.
“Along with providing a national platform for young artists, it also serves to promote established artists. The National Eisteddfod is also committed to encourage the appreciation and understanding of the visual arts in Wales.”
The Wrexham and District 2011 Open Exhibition will be selected by curator Alessandro Vincentelli (BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead) and artists Steffan Jones Hughes and Lois Williams (winner of the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the 1999 Eisteddfod).
The Visual Arts Exhibition at the National Eisteddfod is one of the pinnacles of the fine and applied arts in Wales, attracting up to 40,000 visitors.
For the first time in the history of the Eisteddfod in Wrexham, the Gold Medal for Fine Art, the Gold Medal for Craft and Design and the Gold Medal for Architecture and the Young Artists Scholarship and the Architectural Scholarship will be awarded for excellence, commitment and originality.
The exhibition is open to any person born in Wales, of Welsh parentage, or any person who has lived or worked in Wales for the three years prior to 30 July 2011, or any person who is able to speak or write in Welsh.

The National Eisteddfod attracts 150,000 – 160,000 visitors every year, and is held alternately in north and south Wales. Entry to all Eisteddfod activities is free for the price of a daily Maes ticket.
The Eisteddfod receives a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government through the Welsh Language Board, and also receives money from Welsh local authorities through a partnership agreement with the Welsh Local Government Association.
The Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod is held on Lower Berse Farm off Ruthin Road, Wrexham, from 30 July – 6 August.
