Call for review into WAG’s autism action plan

Welsh Conservatives called for a review of WAG’s autism action plan during the group’s Opposition Debate on Wednesday February 9th.

It follows the NASC (National Autism Society Cymru) report – The Life We Choose – which highlighted concerns over service provision.

Shadow Minister for Social Justice Mark Isherwood has called for further support for people with autism and their families and carers.

He said: “Right now, the provision available remains patchy and worrying.

“While it is clear that some good progress has been made under the Autism Spectrum Disorder Strategic Action Plan, there are obviously still very worrying gaps in what is being provided.

“Only 20 per cent of people surveyed by the NASC believe that autism services have actually improved over the last three years. For everyone else, they have got worse or stayed the same.

“More than ten per cent of people have been forced to seek diagnosis outside of Wales, citing slow and stressful diagnosis here.

“There is also little to no help available for the transition from child to adult service and more than 50 per cent believed there was no support for employment and social care transition.

“This is the most comprehensive research into the views of individuals and families affected by autism that we have ever seen in Wales. Labour-Plaid must now look very carefully at its findings and review its own strategic action plan.”
