Penlan Leisure Centre joins world swim event

Swimmers in Swansea have the chance to make a splash for charity in the spring.

Penlan pool is one of over 580 across the UK to be taking part in the Swimathon 2011 challenge.

The event is taking place on Saturday April 9 and Sunday April 10 and is aimed at raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

TV presenter Gail Porter and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew have officially launched Swimathon 2011 and entry forms are now available.

Swansea Council runs Penlan Leisure Centre.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “The world’s biggest fundraising swim is the perfect way to start the New Year on a healthy note and I hope the entry forms soon start arriving in their droves.

“Swimming is proven to be a great form of exercise whatever your ability. It’s relaxing for the mind and body and helps to build endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness.”

Any funds raised will help support Marie Curie nurses who provide free nursing care to people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses.

Individual and team entries for Swimathon 2011 are open until April 6.
