Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has supported a petition by the South Meirionnydd Older People’s Forum for a new crossing over the Dyfi River which was presented at the Senedd yesterday.
The petition calls on the National Assembly for Wales to urge the Welsh Government to create a new crossing over the Dyfi River as a matter of priority. It was presented today to the Chair of the Petitions Committee.
Commenting, Mr Bates said:
“I am really pleased that more and more people are putting pressure on the Welsh Government to resolve the potentially disastrous situation at Dyfi Bridge. I have long campaigned for investment in this infrastructure, so that we no longer see closure due to flooding or damage which causes such huge disruption to travellers.
“The Dyfi Bridge is a vital crossing for people accessing services, particularly at Bronglais Hospital and closing the bridge forces people to travel many miles out of their way which is unacceptable.
“I fully support the petition by the South Meirionnydd Older People’s Forum for a new crossing over the Dyfi River. The current bridge should be maintained as a pedestrian and cycle crossing, which would help to protect this valuable piece of architecture and a new bridge nearby would provide a more suitable crossing for vehicles.
“The Welsh Government is currently finalising an options report for improvements to the Dyfi crossing and I hope that the petition will increase pressure for urgent action on this.”
