One of Gwynedd’s leisure centres had reason to celebrate recently after receiving recognition in a national awards ceremony held in Blackpool.
In the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE’s) Performance Networks Awards, the Arfon Leisure Centre, Caernarfon was nominated as one of the most improved performers throughout the United Kingdom in the sports and leisure facility management category.
The awards celebrate the best performers from local councils’ frontline public services and those services that have made the most improvement in performance.
APSE, which is a not for profit national local government body, works with over 300 councils throughout the UK, including Gwynedd, to promote excellence in public services, and is the foremost specialist with regard to local authority front line services.
Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on leisure on Gwynedd Council:
“Promoting sports and leisure is very important to Gwynedd Council and we’re fully committed to making the most of the facilities in the county. We’re delighted that Arfon Leisure centre received recognition in the APSE awards and it’s a credit to the Council and all the staff at the leisure Centre and we hope we can build on the success for the future.”
Alan Hughes, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Leisure Officer said
“We are very proud of the fact that Arfon Leisure Centre was nominated in APSE Performance Network Awards and it’s a credit to the Council’s leisure staff, Centre Manager, Gerallt Roberts, and all his staff for their hard work in managing this achievement. I hope we can go a step further next year by clinching the main award outright.”
Arfon Leisure Centre Manager, Gerallt Roberts added:
”This is great news for the Arfon Leisure Centre and it’s important that we praise the local residents for their loyal support which has seen usage figures increase over the last two years and we hope to further develop partnerships in the community in order to raise the profile of leisure services within Caernarfon and seek to provide the people of the area with the services that they want.”
The Performance Networks Awards were presented by Shobna Gulati, who plays Sunita on popular TV show, Coronation Street. Arfon Leisure Centre was nominated for the for the most improved centre over a two year period award, which was sponsored by Walker Morris.
