Students ‘dig’ underground experience

Students from Coleg Gwent’s Pontypool Campus stepped out of the classroom and into a part of living history when they swapped keyboards for hard hats at Big Pit in Blaenavon recently.

13 executive IT and office skills students from The School of Business visited the coal mine, one of Britain’s leading museums, as part of their tutorial enrichment work to explore the relationship between Wales and the rest of the world.

Lecturer Susan Vaughan said: “Despite the cold and windy weather, the group enjoyed a guided tour led by an ex-miner 90 metres underground, even getting to try wearing a ‘lamp belt’ and respirator.  The visit helped build students’ understanding of Welsh history for their ‘Wales and the World’ work, but also gave them important opportunities for teambuilding.”
