AMs express disappointment as talks collapse on future of The Hill

Mohammad Asghar, National Assembly Member for South Wales East, has expressed his disappointment at the collapse of talks to open Wales’s first residential ballet school at The Hill in Abergavenny.

The Shadow Minister for Heritage & Equality has called on Coleg Gwent, the property’s owner, to do everything possible to ensure the building is used as some form of educational establishment which can benefit the local community.

He said: “I want to see this fabulous building maintained as an educational facility which can benefit those living in Abergavenny and its surrounding areas.

“I fully support the work of the campaign group CASH (Community Action to Save the Hill) in ensuring this happens. The local community have been very active in campaigning to save The Hill and in opposing the withdrawal of educational services from the building.

“Officials at Coleg Gwent must get around the negotiating table and do everything possible to ensure The Hill is used for the community’s benefit as a centre of education, as local residents wish”.

Nick Ramsay, Assembly Member for Monmouth, added: “I was very disappointed to hear about the collapse of the latest efforts to turn The Hill into a ballet school and community facility.

“It’s now up to all of us who care passionately about this local landmark to work together to do what we can to secure the future it deserves.”
