Commenting on the announcement yesterday by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions that the Government is planning a new flat-rate pension of £140, Jenny Willott, the Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat’s Parliamentary Party Committee on Work and Pensions said:
“I’m delighted that the Government has announced this plan, which will take millions of pensioners out of poverty.
“The last Government created an unfair, complicated system that discourages people from saving for their retirement. This new system will encourage people to save while also reducing pensioner poverty. It will benefit women in particular, who have been let down by our pension system for decades.
“I’m so pleased to see this Lib Dem policy being implemented by the Government.
“It is a testament to the Government and to the Lib Dem Pensions Minister, Steve Webb MP, that they are doing more in the first year of Government to help pensioners than Labour managed during 13 years in power.”
