Appeal for information on Anglesey

North Wales Police are appealing for information after another incident involving the theft of heating oil on Anglesey.

District Sergeant Andy McGregor said that he was now urging home owners to be extra vigilant and to make sure that their tanks are secure.

The warning comes after an incident in the Moelfre area on March 10th when offenders stole a quantity of heating oil from a tank.

Sgt McGregor said: “The theft of heating oil is a crime currently on the increase in our area. The recent BBC programme, XRAY, highlighted similar thefts in the Flintshire area, and unfortunately, Anglesey is no different.

“I would ask home owners to be extra vigilant and secure their oil tanks and carry out regular checks on the pipe work and ensure access to the site of their oil tanks is secure.”

North Wales Police are now offering tips to help keep your home heating oil safe:-

  • Install lockable caps with crop proof padlocks (close shackle padlocks)
  • Cover any external pipes from the tanks to the house
  • Restrict access to your property by securing gates
  • Consider installing security lighting and CCTV
  • Regularly check the oil level and consider installing a level sensor
  • Ensure that your oil is covered on your household insurance
  • Consider putting a motion level alarm on the tank
  • Keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and don’t just look out for your own oil tank, consider your neighbour’s too
  • Be vigilant of any unusual vans or lorries parked close to homes or gardens
  • Always report any evidence of theft, attempted theft or evidence of tampering to the police.

NB – Please note that any security measures which directly affect the tank should be done in consultation with your heating oil suppliers.

Sgt McGregor said that that police were also working with the local oil delivery firms to provide crime prevention advice to homeowners in an attempt to prevent such thefts and asked anyone to call North Wales Police on 101 (if in Wales) or 0845 6071001 (Welsh) 0845 6071002 (English) alternatively text 66767 or Crimestoppers Wales/Cymru anonymously on 0800555111.
