A new cafe has opened on the Swansea University campus, which will provide Welsh speakers and learners with a place to meet-up and socialise on a daily basis.
Hoffi Coffi was officially launched by journalist and broadcasters Huw Edwards. He also unveiled a mural in the cafe – a tribute poem to his father, Hywel Teifi Edwards, written by Tudur Hallam, Professor of Welsh at Swansea University.
Hoffi Coffi is designed to support initiatives to promote the Welsh language amongst students and staff at the University. Last year Academi Hywel Teifi was launched at Swansea University. It aims to be a powerhouse for promoting Welsh medium education, multidisciplinary research, collaboration and entrepreneurship in the Welsh language.
Speaking at the launch Huw Edwards talked about his late father, Hywel Teifi Edwards, and his long association with the University.
He also speculated what his father would have thought of the cafe: “It’s important that Welsh speakers have somewhere they can come and discuss things in their own language. My father treasured the Welsh language as a natural, everyday means of communication. I know he would like to think that hundreds of students and staff will be coming here to discuss rugby, politics and the University in Welsh. And I hope that everyone will enjoy their time here.”
Huw Edwards was welcomed to Hoffi Coffi by Vice-Chancellor Richard B. Davies, Director of Academi Hywel Teifi, Gwennno Ffrancon and Professor Tudur Hallam, from the Welsh Department, Swansea University.
