Bates: Newtown bypass still on track

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has welcomed the news that the Newtown bypass is still on track, following confirmation from the Minister for Transport that work will commence between April 2011 and April 2014.

Keeping the bypass on the agenda during questions to the Minister for Economy and Transport, Assembly Member Mick Bates stated:

“I have campaigned for many years for a Newtown bypass, which is vital to the people of Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales.  The current traffic chaos in Newtown is reducing trade and choking tourism and progress cannot come soon enough.

“In recent correspondence to me the Minister has confirmed that tenders will be invited later this year for a contractor to be part of the design scheme.  Work is programmed to start between April 2011 and April 2014 and I have been assured by the Minister that there has been no change to that timetable.

“While the Conservatives plan postponements to the Trunk Road programme, the reality is that this work is crucial for the future of our economy in Mid Wales.  I am pleased that the Assembly Government has committed to the Newtown bypass and I hope that work will commence as soon as possible on this key route.”
