The Welsh Assembly Government has announced that Cardiff Council in partnership with Newport Council will become one of its Families First pioneer areas.
The aim of the pioneers is to lead the way in improving the delivery of services to families across Wales, especially those living in poverty, as set out in the Welsh Assembly Government’s Child Poverty Strategy. The Welsh Assembly Government wants to rapidly identify best ways of working and share this on an all-Wales basis.
Cardiff and Newport Councils worked together with other local partners involved in their Children & Young People’s Partnerships to develop a reponse to the Welsh Assembly Government’s request for expressions of interest in becoming a Families First pioneer area and were commended for their impressive application, demonstrating an understanding of the aims of Families First as well as a strong set of proposals to take the initiative forward. The other two consortia selected were:
- South-West Consortium – Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire;
- North-West Consortium – Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy
Cllr John Dixon, Executive Member for Social Care, Health and Wellbeing said, “I am delighted Cardiff Council has been chosen to lead this important initiative in conjunction with our partners in Newport. This is recognition of our understanding of the issues facing families in Cardiff and our commitment to address those issues head on. We look forward to participating fully with the other consortia, sharing and learning best practice as we move this process forward.”
