Sixty thousand homes across Swansea will be ringing the changes for their refuse and recycling services from today.
From Monday April 4 they will be joining thousands of other householders who have already made the switch to alternate weekly collections.
The changes have been flagged up to householders who have their waste and recycling collected on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for several months now.
And every home has received a special fridge magnet which shows them the difference between green week collections and pink week collections.
The main difference to the old way of collecting waste is that household waste put into black bags will be collected every other week. Existing recycling services continue as normal and food waste will be collected weekly.
On green weeks people should leave out kitchen waste, paper and card, cans, glass and garden waste. And on pink weeks it should be kitchen waste, plastics and non-recyclables.
Childminder and mum-of-two Karen Llewellyn, from Gorseinon, lives in one of the 40,000 homes who switched to alternate weekly collections last October.
She said: “Before the new service was introduced we never really recycled. I suppose it was quicker to put everything in one bin and do what we’ve always done.
“Since October, we have had to think a little bit more about what we throw out, whether it’s a pink week or a green week. The fridge magnet telling me which week is which has been really handy.”
Ian Whettleton, Waste Management Divisional Officer in the Council said: “The new system has gone really well in areas it has been introduced. There seems to be a visible increase in the amount of recycling we are collecting and we are really grateful for residents’ participation.”
“Residents shouldn’t worry about food waste either. This is collected weekly and can be put in the special kitchen waste recycling caddies that have been delivered to every home.”
The change to collections has already been introduced for 40,000 homes when Alternate Weekly Collection scheme was launched last October.
