Learners on a project that brings families together to improve literacy and numeracy skills will be recognised at a presentation next week.
Cardiff Council’s Families Learning Together programme is an initiative designed to help parents and carers become effective partners in their children’s education by promoting an understanding of how children are taught as well as enabling children to become motivated independent learners.
The scheme helps parents and carers to become better informed about their children’s learning and more confident in helping them with their school work.
As part of the programme, a team of dedicated teachers visit schools across the city and deliver tailored courses for parents and children that are proven to deliver results which develop parents’ confidence in themselves, raises children’s achievement levels and motivation in school and gives parents and carers the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification.
Cardiff Council Chief Executive Jon House will present certificates to learners who have gained accreditation on the programme during the year at a presentation at City Hall on Wednesday April 13 at 10am.
Learners on the Skills for Life scheme, for those aged 16 or over who are looking to learn new skills or build upon existing ones, will also be recognised at the presentation.
The scheme delivers classes at a variety of venues throughout the city including open learning centres at community centres, schools, enterprise centres and in the workplace. Learners can gain qualifications from Entry level through to Level 2 in Communications (English), Application of Number (maths) and ICT. GCSE is also available in English and maths.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “It’s so very important for children to have help and encouragement with their school work from home and the Families Learning Together scheme is a wonderful and mutually beneficial way to bring parents and children together.
“Both Families Learning Together and Skills for Life are great confidence builders for learners and can open doors to new opportunities. Around 200 learners will be recognised at next week’s presentation and they should all be extremely proud of their achievements.”
