Glamorgan in 89 run defeat

LV= County Championship Division Two
Leicestershire 238 & 245 beat Glamorgan 146 & 248 by 89 runs (PTS: Leics 20, Glam 3)

Glamorgan slumped to an 89-run defeat at Leicestershire in their opening LV= County Championship match of the season.

Dismissed for just 146 in their first innings, the Welsh county were faced with a stiff target in the fourth innings and were bowled out for 248.

The match began badly for Glamorgan with the news that James Harris was unable to play due to illness. But the bowlers enjoyed a good first day, reducing their hosts to 156-8 before Claude Henderson produced a resilient 80 not out as Leicestershire reached 238 all out.

In response, Matthew Hoggard claimed a hat-trick for the home side as Glamorgan’s innings never got going. New captain Alviro Petersen made 91 but had no support as his side conceded a 92-run deficit.

But Glamorgan responded, as two wickets for debutant Graham Wagg reduced Leicestershire to 43-5. But Will Jefferson dug deep, scoring 112. Dean Cosker picked up another four-wicket haul, eight for the match, as the Foxes were bowled out for 245.

Glamorgan were set 338 to win which never looked likely. They lost regular wickets and despite Ben Wright’s 65, fell well short.
