A new governing body of Michaelston Community College and Glyn Derw High School will be established this week, ahead of the schools’ federation in September.
Following a consultation on the federation of the two schools in Ely and Caerau and the decision by the governing bodies to progress the proposal, the formal incorporation of the new governing body will take place on April 12.
This is in order to enable the new governing body to be well prepared ahead of the September 1 start date for the federation which is the first its kind in Cardiff. The establishment of the new governing body will not affect the organisation of either school in the summer term but will make it possible for them to carry out essential preparatory work in advance of the new school year.
The governing bodies of Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College consulted on a proposal to federate after the possibility of this option was raised during the Council’s previous public consultation exercise on a proposal to amalgamate the two schools.
The federation will begin in September and will include the reduction in size of the schools to ten forms of entry, to remove the surplus capacity that currently exists, and a proposed capital investment of £8m, if a bid to the Welsh Assembly Government is successful.
The benefits of federation include enhancing opportunities for young people by combining forces to achieve greater purchasing power and the opportunity to share resources, teaching staff, facilities and ideas.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “The federation of Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College will allow these schools to formalise and build on the already strong relationship they have with each other.
“Federations elsewhere have provided an effective way for schools to learn from each other and combine strengths. This federation will extend more opportunities to the children and young people of Ely and Caerau.”
