Cardiff Children Take Olympic Tour

School children from a Cardiff Primary School were chosen to take a special tour of the 2012 Olympic Park in London.

Pupils from Herbert Thompson Primary School were given the opportunity as recognition for their continuous support of Sport.Cardiff and their involvement in the Get Set initiative, the official London 2012 education programme for schools.

The school has been a key partner with Sport.Cardiff and has worked with the team to use sport as a way of engaging pupils as well as delivering several new sports initiatives at the school including recruiting parents as volunteers.

The 10 lucky pupils who made the trip were selected for their particular interest or development in sport or for best behaviour at school.

The school is the first in Wales to be presented with the opportunity. Pupils were able to see and experience first hand the scale of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and learn about the importance of the infrastructure surrounding them.

Although construction is still ongoing at the site, the children were able to visit a number of venues including the Olympic Stadium, Velodrome, Aquatics Centre, BMX track and the Olympic Village.

The trip was organised by the school and the Olympic Delivery Authority and was supported by Sport.Cardiff, Cardiff Council’s sport development team.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway said: “This visit has been an opportunity of a lifetime for the children and an honour for Herbert Thompson Primary School.

“The benefits from this experience are invaluable to the children and it is hoped that they will continue to be inspired by sport, a key part of the Olympic Games and Cardiff Council’s legacy for sport.”

Sport.Cardiff has a commitment to deliver the demand for grass roots sport generated by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The legacy includes improving club competition and coaching infrastructure to ensure children and young people can take part in high quality sporting activities for the future.

The Get Set Network is open to schools and colleges across the UK and supports 3-19 year olds in exploring the Olympic Values of friendship, respect and excellence and the Paralympic Values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality.
