Over a hundred more homes in Swansea’s Hafod area are to soon be upgraded thanks to a multi-million pound investment.
The latest phase of the Hafod Renewal Area programme will see approximately 120 additional properties given a makeover by the end of March 2012.
Some of the work could include chimney stack replacement, renewal of pitched and flat roof coverings, renewal of fascias and gutters, external wall structural repairs and wall covering treatments including sandstone cleaning, re-pointing and re-rendering.
External windows and doors could also be renewed and entrance porches could be provided.
Hafod was declared a renewal area by Swansea Council in 2001. It was originally targeted after a local house condition survey revealed it had some of the worst housing conditions in the city.
Over 800 of the 949 eligible properties have now received renovation and improvement works.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet is now being asked to approve the next phase of renovation works over the coming year.
Funding is being provided by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Andrew Vye, Swansea Council’s Community Housing Services Manager, said: “The Hafod Renewal Area programme has been an outstanding success since its inception back in 2001.
“Not only has it improved the look of the area but it’s also given many hundreds of residents and traders a better quality of life.
“This latest phase of works will mean we’ll soon be very close to completing the scheme and, subject to available funding, we hope all of the eligible properties will have been upgraded in two years time.”
The overall objectives of the Hafod Renewal Area programme are to improve housing, environmental and socio-economic conditions in the area.
The Renewal Area boundary extends from Unit Superheaters on Morfa Road in the south, Hafod Park to the west, the River Tawe to the east and the Landore railway viaduct on Neath Road to the north.
