A children’s club set up in a Flintshire community that has lost its Post Office and School is celebrating its first anniversary.
Rhydymwyn Kid’s Club started in May 2010 at the village football club and has grown from 5 children at the first meeting to well over 20 a year on.
On Friday 6 May, the leaders, children and members of the local church gathered to celebrate the club’s first birthday.
The church in Rhydymwyn decided to set up the children’s work after speaking to people in the village who told them there was nothing for young people to do. Even though church members help to run the weekly meeting, a number of the volunteers are members of the local community – including Rachael Butlin.
Rachael has been organising the club since the start and said:
“I can’t believe it’s been a year and there are more children coming now than ever.
“The village has nothing – the school and the Post Office has gone – so this was set up for the kids because there was nothing else for them.”
The children at Rhydymwyn Kid’s Club have enjoyed keep fit classes, mask making, face painting and even visits from the local police officer and fire brigade during this first year.
Commenting on the community feel of the group, Rachael added:
“We couldn’t have done it without the Church and the community. It’s amazing!”
Rhydymwyn Kid’s Club meets at Rhydymwyn Football Club every Friday night from 6pm – 7pm for children aged 5-11.
