Walk to School Week

School children are getting ready to put their best foot forward and take part in Walk to School Week.

Walk to School Week is a national campaign, which runs from May 16 – 20 and encourages children and parents to walk to school for health and environmental benefits.

This year, 25 primary schools across Cardiff are taking part in the campaign with the help of Cardiff Council’s Road Safety Team who provide advice, information and promotional materials to schools about how children can travel to school safely.

The team works with schools to promote the benefits of going to school on foot and encourage pupils, parents and staff to leave the car at home.

Many schools across the city already operate a daily Walking Bus with children and parents making their way to and from school on foot together providing regular exercise and the opportunity for the youngsters to develop vital road safety skills as they walk.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff Cllr Keith Hyde will visit Marlborough Primary School and join their walk on Thursday 19th May 2011.

Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing and newly appointed AM, Cllr John Dixon will also attend the event and talk to children and parents about the benefits of walking to School

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde, said: “The Walk to School Week is a fun way of encouraging children and parents to travel to school in a healthier and more environmentally friendly way. Many Schools across Cardiff already actively promote walking to school and run a Walking Bus, where children accompanied by volunteer parents walk to school. I hope this special week will encourage more parents and children to find out more about the Walking Bus offered by their school.”
