Councillors at Neath Port Talbot have today agreed to adopt a policy to replace any diseased trees on highway maintained verges that are felled.
“The Council has a legal duty to manage and maintain its tree stock,” says Council Leader Ali Thomas.
Sometimes this means that dead, dying or diseased tress have to be removed. Since the beginning of the year, fifteen trees have had to be felled for safety reasons.
“Maintaining the number of trees is extremely important to the environment for future generations,” Councillor Thomas added.
“So any tree felled on highway land will be replaced with two suitably sized trees at an appropriate location.”
The decision coincides with National Tree Planting Week (25th November to 6th December) and reinforces the Council’s commitment to make positive improvements to the environment.
The tree planting scheme will improve ecosystems, help to reduce the impact of CO2 emissions and improve air quality.
Replacement trees will be purchased, planted and maintained from existing budgets.
