A major clean-up operation will target litter and rubbish along the North Wales shoreline aiming to make communities cleaner and more pleasant places.
The Big Spring Clean is a multi-agency, week long, coastal clean-up to be held between 21 and 27 May as part of the Welsh Assembly Governments Tidy Towns Initiative. Community clean-ups will take place across North Wales and it will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of throwing litter and fly-tipping.
The Gwynedd Campaigns will be held:
Monday, 23 May – Nefyn beach, meet at the car park at 1pm.
Wednesday, 25 May – Hirael Bay, Bangor, meet at the car park near the recycling banks at 10.30am.
The Big Spring Clean 2011 follows the success of last year’s clean-up and organisers are calling upon members of the public to join their local event and help make their community a clean and pleasant place.
Among the organisations taking part will be Denbighshire County Council, Conwy County Borough Council, Gwynedd Council, Isle of Anglesey County Council and Keep Wales Tidy.
The Tidy Towns initiative was created to improve local environmental quality and tackle issues such as litter, dog fouling and fly tipping.
Gruff Jones North Wales Community Project Manager for Keep Wales Tidy said:
“We hope this clean up event will be a great opportunity to work in partnership with local residents to improve the local environment. So if you enjoy a walk down to the beach, or perhaps you enjoy fishing or water sports such as surfing, why not join one of the events which has been organised in you area?
“We really need your help to ensure that this event is a success, why not join us and do your bit to keep your local coastline clean and tidy?”
The North Wales coastline and beaches need our protection – not only does litter make the coast look untidy and dirty, it can be dangerous to wildlife and poses very real health risks. It’s estimated that over 100,000 marine animals die each year from entanglement and ingestion of plastic.
Spaces are limited for these events. For more information and to register, contact a representative in your area:
