The ‘Gower Inter Schools Rugby Challenge Cup’ took place at Dunvant Rugby Club this week. The tournament was organised by PCSO Andy Brown and PCSO Neil Rees, and was sponsored by the South Wales Police Youth Trust.
With support from the Trust all the young people involved in the tournament got a certificate and programme, which doubled up as raffle tickets for a chance to win a rugby ball, and other prizes.
The tournament made up of 12 local schools from the Swansea area included Sketty, Mayals, Grange, Hendrefolian, Bishopston, St Davids, Pen-y-fro, Pennard, Penclawdd, Dunvant, Llyn Derw, Parklands, Crwys, Llanrhidian, Newton and Oystermouth.
PCSO Neil Rees said “Sport is a great way to engage young people, and the tournament has helped the youngsters get to know local officers better.”
Eliot who plays for Hendrefolian Primary said “It’s been a great competition and we’ve all had loads of fun”
The event has been running for three years now with previous years seeing up to 300 school children taking part. A cup was donated by the Ospreys Rugby team, who also provided free tickets to see the Ospreys play next season.
The teams included girls and boys from the primary schools who played full contact rugby on four pitches. The cup was won by Dunvant, with Oystermouth winning the Shield, and Llanrhidian winning the Plate.
PCSO Andrew Brown said “The event was all about partnership working, and a big thanks go to Dunvant RFC, Ospreys, Swansea Council, WRU, Mid and West Wales Fire Service, and St Johns Ambulance.”
