A major riverbank clean-up project is set to take place on Friday, May 20th along the River Taff in Pontypridd.
Thanks to Keep Wales Tidy, the Tidy Towns Team, volunteers and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council staff, the river bank alongside Ynysangharad War Memorial Park and Pontypridd Town Centre will undergo a full clean up in a bid to rid the area of unsightly rubbish.
Following concerns expressed by local residents, a large stretch of the Taff riverbank, Pontypridd will be totally transformed thanks to a scheme organised by the Tidy Towns initiative.
Tidy Towns is a scheme launched between Keep Wales Tidy and all Welsh local authorities, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, which seeks to empower people to take responsibility for their own local environment.
This will be delivered by establishing and developing community groups throughout Wales who will work towards meeting the needs of their local community by adopting and improving areas of their environment to ensure it has a sustainable future.
Volunteers ‘adopt’ their area and focus on its ongoing care with many communities will be encouraged to adopt waste black-spots and restore them to their former glory.
The stretch of riverbank has often been hailed a “grot spot” of litter, debris and general overgrowth.
The team of workers will tackle the entire area by cleaning away all evidence of flytipping and cutting back the extensive overgrowth.
The Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “We welcomed the Tidy Towns initiative in Rhondda Cynon Taf and projects such as this one prove how successful it has been so far.
“The clean up of the riverbank will help to improve the surrounding environment for visitors to the park and Pontypridd Town Centre. It is vital that we work together to ensure that we tackle waste together and improve the environment that we live, work and visit.
