Willott Welcomes Drop in Unemployment

Jenny Willott MP, the Co- Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee on Work and Pensions has today said that figures showing an across-the-board drop in unemployment in Wales and the UK are ‘a welcome step in the right direction’.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment in Wales fell by 10,000 people compared to last quarter.  Across the UK unemployment fell by 36,000 people over the same period.

Youth unemployment, which has been a priority for the Westminster Government, also fell by 30,000 across the UK since the last quarter.

Commenting Jenny said:

“These figures are a welcome step in the right direction.  There is still a lot of work to be done here in Wales and across the UK to ensure that we continue to create new jobs, especially for young people, but these figures are a very positive sign.

“It’s also very welcome that the majority of these new jobs come from the private sector.  At a time when the public sector, especially in Wales, has to tighten its belt, it is vital that the private sector continues to create jobs.  The Welsh Assembly Government needs to work with Westminster to ensure that this progress continues and that these new jobs are sustainable.
