Mount Stuart Primary Pupils Set out their Stalls

Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown is preparing to throw open the school gates and invite in the local community when they host a farmers’ market this week.

The children will be involved in all aspects of running the market on Friday May 27 (2.45pm – 3.45pm) when the school yard will be transformed with stalls and stands selling refreshments and local produce.

The school has worked closely with the organisers of Riverside Farmers’ Market to arrange the event and pupils have been busy making cakes and products to sell to their customers.

Local producers of cheese, fruit and vegetables and bread and cakes will be selling their wares while other stalls will be offering hot food, plants and herbs and fresh lemonade.

Pupils will be helping out by waiting on tables, serving refreshments and collecting money for goods.

In the run-up to market day, the whole school will be involved in project work linked to the market featuring lessons on where the food we eat comes from, healthy eating and local enterprise.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “This is a wonderful enterprise for the children of Mount Stuart Primary to be involved in. I’m sure they will enjoy being at the heart of the organisation, and selling at the market. I’m know they will find the projects they will work on in the classroom in the run up to the event very interesting.”

Mount Stuart Primary headteacher, Peter Morris, said: “This has provided our School Council and Eco-Committee with a fantastic opportunity to take responsibility for organising an event that involves the whole school and wider community. They have learned about business enterprise, sustainability, global citizenship and decision-making in a very real and exciting context. We are all looking forward to the first of many Mount Stuart markets!”
