“Seen It, Heard It, Read It… Now Recycle It” is a competition run as part of Cardiff Council’s School programme, the “Really Rubbish Campaign.” All Primary schools in Cardiff were invited to take part.
The schools were asked to collect a variety of items of media (cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs, books, games, DVD’s) from home, which they no longer wanted.
Cardiff Council’s Recycling Team then collected the material from the school, so that it could be re-used (if in a good condition) or recycled into its component parts by a company called Wilcox.
The school that collected the most material (calculated by total weight collected divided by number of pupils in school) won the competition.
- 44 Primary Schools across Cardiff took part.
- In total, just under 9 tonnes (8770 KG) of material was collected
- The winning school was Cefn Onn Primary who collected 560 KG of material (which worked out at 5.4 KG per pupil)
Cllr Margaret Jones, Executive Member for Environment said, “I congratulate all the schools who took part in this excellent competition. To collect nearly 9 tonnes is a considerable achievement and particular congratulations must go to Cefn Onn Primary School for collecting the most items. It’s never too early to learn how unwanted items from home can be reused or recycled to prevent them ending up on our landfill sites. Well done to everyone involved.”
Cardiff Council cannot accept media items in green recycling bags, but they can be brought down to any Household Waste Recycling Centre* and put into the media banks provided by Wilcox- VHS tapes are not included. *Waungron Road, Lamby Way, Bessemer Close, Wedal Road.
