Family Fun Day For Bookworms

Under-fives can enjoy stories, songs, games and crafts when National Bookstart Day is celebrated in Rhondda Cynon Taf at the Rhondda Heritage Park on Friday, June 10, 2011.

Pre-school children and their parents are invited to the free event organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries in the marquee at the Heritage Park in Trehafod near Pontypridd from 10am – 2pm.

Bookstart Day is part of National Bookstart Week, and the theme for the day will be “All Aboard”. Rhondda Cynon Taf Talkabout team, Language and Play and the Toy Library will be along, and the Library Service will be parking up its Bookbus mobile library for the day.

Children can enjoy stories and rhymes, crafts and climb aboard the mobile library, at no cost to parents or carers. The Bookstart Bear is also making a guest appearance.

Bookstart is the national early intervention and cultural access programme for every child. National Bookstart Week (June 6-12) brings together families, professionals and Bookstart together in an annual celebration of the programme.

Cllr Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “Bookstart promotes fathers, mothers and carers as the child’s most important teachers and encourages them to become role models by valuing reading in the home.

“We hope many parents and children will get all aboard on June 10, to share favourite stories, books and rhymes and have lots of fun!”
