Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called for urgent Ministerial intervention into Conwy and Denbighshire Local Development Plans.
Denbighshire County Council has recently decided to press ahead with proposals for up to 2,000 new homes in the Bodelwyddan area. This has prompted calls for an urgent re-think on plans for Conwy County Borough Council’s plans for 870 new homes in nearby Abergele.
Speaking after raising the issue in the Senedd last week, Darren Millar said:
‘The consequences of Denbighshire’s Local Development Plan must be fully considered by Conwy County Borough Council to look at the knock on effect in nearby Abergele.
‘Many residents in Bodelwyddan use services such as schools and medical facilities in Abergele and this cannot be ignored by planning officers when they look at proposals for new housing in the Conwy Local Development Plan.
‘These housing targets are based on housing market assessments that were undertaken at the height of the property boom when there was a much higher level of demand for housing across the whole of the country.
‘Although demand has fallen dramatically since then, these targets are being centrally driven by Welsh Government Ministers and this is going to have a big detrimental impact in parts of my constituency.
‘If current proposals go ahead, local services will be completely over-stretched. We need an urgent re-think on these unsustainable plans and that’s only likely to come with Ministerial intervention.’
