Geology of the Clwydian Range – resources for schools

The Clwydian Range AONB is launching an exciting new pack for schools that will bring the landscape and geology of the Clwydian Range right into the classroom in a series of virtual field trips.  The teaching packs use locations throughout the Clwydian Range to deliver GCSE Geology through virtual field trips which cover all aspects of the GCSE curriculum.

The packs have been developed by the Clwydian Range AONB with funding from CCW as an aid to learning and linking the National Curriculum to the local landscape of the Clwydian Range.

Jacqui Malpas, Geodiversity Officer with the Clwydian Range said

“The Welsh National Curriculum emphasizes the importance of the ‘Outdoor Classroom’.  The study of geology, provides and exciting way to understand our Earth, how it has changed, and is still changing.  GCSE geology encourages students to acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how geological science works and its essential role in society.”

David Shiel – Senior Countryside Officer for the Clwydian Range AONB said

“We have such fantastic geological formations in the Clwydian Range you really do not have to go too far to experience some of the incredible features that make up our local landscape.  From the dramatic limestone outcrops and pavements around Loggerheads, Llanferres and Llanarmon to the interesting Silurian shales around Moel Famau the processes that have shaped this spectacular landscape are easy to see if you know what to look for.  And of course we have continued to shape the landscape through farming, quarrying and other developments to give us such an area of Outstanding natural beauty.”  ”

Amongst other things, the pack presents a case study of mineral extraction ‘from limestone to cement’ to illustrate the Welsh National Curriculum Key Stage 3 Science; The Sustainable Earth.  With the support of Hanson at this has meant a virtual field trip to the works at Padeswood and Cefn Mawr Quarry

These resources provide a variety of examples.  It is based on practical field-work and allows teachers to tailor activities to the particular needs of their group of students.
