Mohammad Asghar, South Wales East AM, has highlighted the importance of encouraging pupils to study modern foreign languages at GCSE level and beyond.
Speaking in the Siambr on Wednesday, Mr Asghar pointed out that during the last administration’s tenure “the number of 15-year-old pupils entered into GCSE examinations for modern foreign languages fell by nearly 14 per cent”.
He said: “The uptake of languages such as French and German fell considerably, as did the number of pupils entered for GCSE examinations in languages such as Italian and world languages such as Arabic”.
Mr Asghar highlighted the “immense benefits and transferable skills that studying modern foreign languages” offers students – and urged the Minister to ensure the Welsh Government’s ‘Making Languages Count’ strategy proves effective.
