After the huge critical and popular successes of King Lear and Frankenstein earlier this year, the latest National Theatre production to be filmed and broadcast live to Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan is the unequivocally alive-and-kicking revival of The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov’s 1904 masterpiece, brought robustly up to date in Howard Davies’ subtle and powerful re-imagining. This exciting production will be screened live in HD via satellite at 6.45pm on Thursday 30th June.
Set at the very start of the twentieth century, The Cherry Orchard captures a poignant moment in Russia’s history as the country rolls inexorably towards the 1917 revolution.
‘Wonderfully fresh, funny and deeply felt. One of the finest ensembles I have ever seen at the National.’ Daily Telegraph
Zoë Wanamaker is magnificent as Ranyevskaya, who returns home more or less bankrupt after ten years abroad. Luxuriating in her fading moneyed world and regardless of the increasingly hostile forces outside, she and her brother snub the lucrative scheme of Lopakhin, a peasant turned entrepreneur, to save the family estate. In so doing, they put up their lives to auction and seal the fate of the beloved orchard.
‘Zoë Wanamaker is superb.’ The Times
Wanamaker suggests the acuteness of a woman’s emotional intelligence on the subject of why she is still prepared to choose romantic love over financial prudence. At the same time there is the fidgety irresponsibility of a woman who, when in doubt, tends to distract people with a grandly delivered insult.
“Hear what I have to say about the Cherry Orchard, because it is mine. I say bring it down, tear it down. Smash it down and tear it down. Watch, watch. Just you watch. I will build holiday villas, as far as the eye can see. I will build a place for everyone to come and enjoy. For the future. And this will be the future. A new life. A new way of life. Here! Come now and play. Play. Play! Get the band to play.”
Theatr Mwldan is delighted to be able to present this acclaimed world class production, direct from the stage of the National Theatre in London, filmed and broadcast live via satellite to the screen in Mwldan 2. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to experience some top class drama!
‘A funny and affecting production with an excellent cast, who capture the wild exuberance and piercing melancholy of Chekhov’s play.’ Metro
