Graduates from Swansea’s Children’s University have received their awards at a special ceremony in the city.
The Children’s University rewards participation in out-of-school activities by children and young people in their schools and communities and 200 of them took centre stage at Swansea University’s Faraday Lecture Theatre on Thursday July 7.
More than 17,000 students in Swansea have gone through the Children’s University scheme since it started in 2005.
Swansea Council has developed the Children’s University in Swansea with a variety of schools, community groups, clubs and partner organisations.
Cllr Mike Day, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “This exciting and innovative scheme has developed with the support and dedication of a team of out of school learning providers and partners.
“The Children’s University enables each student to reach their maximum potential in whatever areas of learning they desire.
“Its success is a credit to the activity providers and the youngsters themselves who have shown willingness and dedication to take part.”
The scheme awards credits to children and young people aged five to 19 who attend activities outside normal school hours. Every hour of participation equates to one credit. The credits are banked and accumulate until a bronze, silver or gold award is achieved.
The Gold awards were presented by Swansea Lord Mayor Cllr Ioan Richard and Cllr Day presented Kids’ College Silver awards.
Cllr Mary Jones, Lead Councillor for Children and Young People, presented Children’s University Silver Awards and Cllr Alan Robinson, Cabinet Member for Community Regeneration, presented Silver Youth University awards.
