Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar joined pupils from Ysgol Llanddulas today on a cycle ride along a section of route 5 of the National Cycle Network to Abergele.
The ride, organised by UK charity, Sustrans, was held to congratulate children on their dedication to transforming the school run. A small group of pupils who have regularly cycled to school, were rewarded for their efforts with a trip on two wheels to Abergele promenade.
Gwen Thomas, Sustrans Bike It officer for Conwy, has been working with the teachers, pupils and parents to encourage children to get to school under their own steam since November 2008.
Gwen commented, “I was delighted to organise a bike ride with the Shadow Minister for Health for the dedicated cyclists at Ysgol Llanddulas. There has been a great improvement in the uptake of cycling here recently and the school are committed to sustaining the pro-cycling culture they have worked so hard to build.
“Cycling is great for a child’s health and independence; children who come to school by bike are much more alert and ready for the school day.”
Shadow Minister for Health, Darren Millar, added, “It was great to see so many children on bikes enjoying exercise and being outdoors. Cycling to school is a great way for children incorporate daily exercise in to their routine, whilst having fun.”
The school has recently held a cycling raffle competition – each time a child cycles to school, they receive a raffle ticket. Prizes will be raffled on Thursday 14 July.
Sustrans works with 21 schools in Conwy, in partnership with Conwy County Borough Council.
The Sustrans website – www.sustrans.org.uk – has a free online map service to discover how to get around everyday on foot or by bike. Search for local or national routes, plot journeys, or find what the local area has to offer from schools, supermarkets and local landmarks to car clubs, bus stops and bike shops.
