Canoeists helped by RNLI Port Talbot lifeboat crew

Port Talbot ILB was launched at 2.13pm, Sunday 10 July, after a report from a member of the public that two canoes were possibly in difficulty due to a fresh onshore wind and a choppy sea, very close to the rocks of the deep water harbour breakwater.

Port Talbolt Inshore lifeboat was soon on scene and found two people in the canoes were having great difficulty in canoeing in those conditions. They were advised to turn back to shore by the lifeboat crew and agreed to do so.

However, instead of returning to Aberavon beach they went ashore under the watchful eye of the lifeboat onto Morfa beach. Once on the beach the lifeboat helm was put ashore to check the two people out and apart from being quite tired they were okay. Morfa beach is owned by the local Tata steelworks and the two canoeists and their canoes were taken by the works security personnel to the steelworks main entrance where they were handed over to the local coastguard.
