Porthdinllaen lifeboat volunteers rescue boat drifting perilously close to rocks

Porthdinllaen RNLI volunteers were called into action last night  (Tuesday 12 July) to rescue a lone boater whose cabin cruiser had lost power and was drifting perilously close to nearby rocks.

At 5.25pm Porthdinllaen’s all-weather lifeboat, the Hetty Rampton, was launched to assist a broken-down cabin cruiser off the Lleyn Peninsula.

The skipper of the vessel, a 30ft cabin cruiser called the Thymekeeper, was unsure of its exact location so the lifeboat immediately began searching along the coast towards Whistling Sands.

The boat, with one person on board, was located approximately a quarter of a mile north-west of Cwmistir Point and had lost power in both of its engines.

The vessel had no anchor and was drifting perilously close to the nearby rocks so a lifeboat crew member was transferred onto Thymekeeper because its sole occupant was exhausted from his ordeal.

On boarding the boat, the lifeboat crew member was able to start one of its engines and managed to make headway to Porthdinllaen Harbor, closely escorted by the lifeboat.

Thymekeeper was placed on a mooring in Porthdinllaen harbour by the lifeboat crew and its occupant transferred ashore to recuperate.

The lifeboat had returned back to station by 6.50pm.
