Work is progressing well on a new gateway mosaic into Neath town centre.
A 47 metre mosaic frieze made up of a massive 11,000 tile pieces, is being installed at Stockham’s Corner at the approach to the town centre.
This project is part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s renewal area programme for Neath East and aims to make this gateway to Neath more welcoming and appealing for visitors.
The mosaic frieze was commissioned as a result of two community consultations and design proposals were drawn up by Artist Mick Petts of Global Impacts Ltd.
The bilingual display, which has been professionally translated, illustrates a number of historical images and says ‘Welcome to Neath.’ They represent Neath’s industrial heritage including coal, agriculture, ship building and water transport as well as oil and metal. There are also images of the estuary and surrounding hills.
Council Leader, Ali Thomas (pictured), will unveil the mosaic at an official launch in a few weeks.
He said, “This impressive gateway feature has been developed to improve the appearance to Neath and feedback to date has been extremely positive.
“Improving the image and perception of the town is a crucial element of upgrading its tourism appeal which, in turn, brings huge benefits to the local economy and surrounding communities.
“This project complements the Council’s other regenerations plans in and around the town centre and I’m delighted to see the housing renovation work at Florence Street and parts of Windsor Road.”
