Council tax payers urged to beware bogus callers

Denbighshire’s Council Tax department is warning council tax payers in the county to beware bogus phone callers who have been asking people for their full bank account details over the phone in order to receive a credit on their account.

Since Monday, staff in the department have taken a number of telephone calls from anxious council tax customers who have been contacted from a city office in London advising them of a credit on their council tax account.  They were requested to give their full bank account details in order for the credit to be transferred.  Fortunately the ones that have contacted us so far are aware of these fraudsters and didn’t give out their details. The number they were given to contact was:  02071 933792.

Ken Jones, Denbighshire’s head of revenues and benefits, is warning people not to give out their bank details to anybody over the phone.

“Council tax customers need to know that we would never ask for these details even if they were due a refund so please don’t give you details out to anyone over the phone.”
